Lowbrow Art & Pop Surrealism Explained
That looks really cool
Thanks a bunch!
Thanks for the synthesis ,I now know I’m one of these Pop surrealist low brow artist. Your video scratched a metaphorical itch I didn’t know I had. Thanks
Rock on!
Yes. Very informative. Thank you.
Thanks for watching!
Thanks. Im glad i just found you. Im learning a lot.
Glad to hear it!
I love it! I shall give it a try
Have fun!
In elementary school I was, along with a few other students, one of the best artists in my whole class.I would stay in indoors for recess some times just so I could work on a project. When the other kids would come back to class they would gather around my desk to see what I was doing.I got a lot of oohs and ahhs from the students. 'how do you that, it's amazing? I would say "I don't know, I just do, it's a natural talent, I guess.'
Hope you have kept up with the art making!
I have, right now I have a deal with the local coffee shop and they're letting me display my paintings for sale. It's my first time putting my art on display for the public to see.I hope it goes well. Mostly abstract.
Wow this channel is everything new artists need, well done you!! I'm sure it's gonna explode pretty soon! Keep going, loving it!!! Thank U so much!😂❤️
Well...it hasn't exploded for about 10 years now ; ) but thanks for the compliment. I do appreciate it. Good luck to you!
Looks fun..do you have a video that is in real time so I can learn this? Very new and like I said..looks fun!
Unfortunately no, but perhaps this one might help? ua-cam.com/video/f7lr-MihoZk/v-deo.html
Downvoted because of the music. Tutorials are enough on their own with the voiceover. The music alienates a lot of people. There are many who will be triggered by sensory overload from the visual, voice and music. It's such a shame because it's an interesting video. If I, or someone else doesn't mention it, then video creators aren't aware of the problem and can't do something to help in future videos.
To each their own I guess. Some tend to think the low background music is is necessary. Thanks for the comment.
Very useful. Any books you could recommend to find out more about this topic and everything related to composition in abstract art?
Thanks! No books that I know of. Mostly pulled tidbits from here and there over the years...hence the video.
I hadn't heard of Hi-Fructose and just subscribed! I randomly came across a documentary of Robert Williams a few years ago and have been a huge fan of Juxtapose ever since. You did an excellent job of weaving together the styles and artists and presented it clearly. That's not easy.
Thanks so much!
Honestly, I would compare pop surrealism with the devil trying to draw cartoons. Most artworks done by these artists are just _wrong_ and feel vulgar and just not cool. They don't pass the vibe check. Take Mark Ryden for example, who consistently paints literal naked children in his paintings. Nobody ever talks about that ever or criticizes it. Pop surrealism is perverted, misguided, and low moral, and it's a shame, because as a cubist who uses expressionism, I see the charm that could've been being constantly tarnished by artists whose inappropriate fetishes manifested into their art.
Hmm...I'm not sure what the "vibe check" means and haven't really considered your thoughts before. I get, understand your views and opinions and welcome them. Why not? To each their own. However, the term low-brow did refer to fringe art, hence the title. One essay by Carlo McCormick has a quote that sums of Ryden pretty well: "Mark Ryden does not celebrate evil, even it's its most campy denatured form. Quite to the contrary, his art-making can be seen as an elaborate charade of avoidance towards life's grimmer realities. His is an utterly pure infantilistic escapism." (source: www.markryden.com/at-play-in-the-slaughterhouse-of-american-pop#:~:text=Mark%20Ryden%20does%20not%20celebrate,an%20utterly%20pure%20infantilistic%20escapism.) I do like your line "the devil trying to draw cartoons." Thanks for sharing your thoughts and taking the time to comment.
Hi frank thank you for sharing this awesome video. I’m a beginner painter and saw this video and will paint this today. Will you be making more videos like this in the future? Step by step really helps in my confidence and over all painting. Thanks again
Glad it was helpful! There are a series of these tuts in the playlist folder ua-cam.com/play/PL9RTvsPY8gP-Iempe87Fi4n7QQGaNgUhT.html Some of the others may be too easy for you if starting on this particular one.
A really useful video for me, I am doing an art course about landscape, and history of art so this has really helped me. Thanks
You're very welcome!
Thanks a lot for this video! ❤️
You are welcome! Thanks for taking the time to comment.
I need help guy I have a set of landscape paintings by Arthur E Bard their from 1959 they where commission for someone named Al Carter oil paintings on board can someone point me in right direction
You may have to google him and check if he has been in some auction houses, or has gallery representation.
Good to find an advisor who is clear, and knowledgeable..
I appreciate that! Thank you for the comment!
Imagine a panel from Berserk (manga) or Shigurui (manga) blowup in a gallery. Definitely fine art.
Indeed!
❤❤
Thanks!
Very nice........now it's time to hit my striping brushes.....
Some is art most is tripe
To each their own I guess. Thanks for taking the time to post a comment!
Want to know the truth, manga and anime is fine art if your Japanese. Comic books and cartoon is consider fine art if you go to usa art school you can use it. It is due to personification and stuff
Thanks for the comment!
Nice and easy demonstration.. Thanks for this 👍🏽
Glad it was helpful!
Couldn't you just start with a pencil drawing directly on the lino and then ink it over once perfect? Why bother with the previous 3 or 4 steps? Thanks for the video. Getting into printmaking recently.
Some harder lino will hold pencil marks, but at times they are sometimes hard to erase. I used a softer type of lino and drawing on it is a little harder.
Ah ok. Gotcha. Thanks for the reply.@@FrankCurkovic
Thank you for taking the time to create this video, it is very informative. My question: what kind of marker do you use to go over the pencil marks on the lino that will not wash away when you wash off each printing ink? Does it interfere with the printing ink at all?
Hi, the marker should be a permanent marker like a Sharpie, not a water based one. The marker will not affect the print. Good luck!
Very very good
Thanks for taking the time to comment! Much appreciated.
@@FrankCurkovicwho made the artwork at 2:41?
That is Robert Williams, which is also the cover of GnR's "Appetite for Destruction" album.

You are very welcome! Good luck!
Dear Mr. Frank, thank you for the post How to improve in drawing. I am an amateur, I draw and paint for pleasure and relaxation. I started a few years ago with Zentagle drawing and right hemisphere drawing. Subsequently, I discovered courses for adults, where I attended for watercolor and still attend for oil painting. I tried collage, graphic printing, gel plate printing, figure sketching. Now I am very interested in linocut. I am currently in a crisis phase where I would like to move from drawing and painting based on photographs to my own subjects, but somehow I can't think of topics. Maybe that's why I enjoy finding different methods of creative activity. That's why I'm also looking for different videos and that's how I came to your UA-cam channel. Maybe it looks like I'm "jumping from one to the other", but I really enjoy it :-). Watching your video stroked my soul very much and spoke to me. I realized that my wayfinding and trying different methods was actually okay, and that maybe it was more important than the goal itself. Thank you for the opportunity to watch your videos, which I am really looking forward to and I believe I will get a lot out of them. I wish you much success in your work. Marta
Hi Marta! What a great comment! I was the same jumping with techniques and media. I didn't think anything wrong with it, as I enjoyed the explorations. You learn more and it keeps things interesting. Thanks for taking the time to write such a thoughtful comment. Much appreciated.
Thank you very much Frank 🙂
Cool work!
Thanks for the visit!

Take a look at the artist: Nelson Hernandez
I will have a look. Thanks!
Thank you!
You're welcome!
It's worth pointing out the term "Lowbrow" was first used when the book of Robert Williams took hold: "The Lowbrow Art Of Robert Williams."
Good piece of trivia! Thanks for the comment.
Thanks!
You bet!
What is the block made of that you are carving?
Standard is a linoleum block, but here I am using a softer version called "softoleum." A bit more expensive.
was your student last year lol this is amazing
Thanks bro!
The ones who appropriate pre-existing images are called creatives. Those who don't are called Artists. Artists are original, creatives are copies.
Interesting perspective.
Thanks for sharing, it’s a gorgeous idea! 👌🏻☺️
Thank you! Cheers!
Thank you for the Great work Frank much appreciated! I just noticed that when you mentioned Barbara Kruger you had Martha Rosler's name shown on the screen 6: 47 unless, of course, this is your way of appropriating :D thank you again very informative!
Thanks for the comment. Yes, I noticed that error. I think I pinned a comment about it. Not sure the best way to fix it without killing off links.
